I cannot express how grateful I am to Lucking & Sons Funeral Directors. This incredible family-run service went above and beyond for us during one of the most heartbreaking and vulnerable times of our lives. I visited two other funeral directors before them, and choosing Luckings & Sons was without question the best decision I could have made.

Roy and Darren were extraordinary from beginning to end. Their wisdom, kindness, patience, and understanding carried me through decisions I never imagined I’d have to make. They listened, they reassured, they guided — always with dignity, compassion, and sincerity.

And I must mention both Callums, who were equally kind, gentle, supportive, and very helpful. Their care and professionalism were truly outstanding. Every single member of the team at Lucking & Sons treated my father — and all of us — with such kindness that it felt as though they became part of our extended family.

They took care of absolutely everything:
• liaising with Old Park Meadow
• helping us find the perfect celebrant
• accommodating every request
• ensuring I could visit my dad whenever I needed
• presenting him so beautifully and respectfully every single time

In the depths of our sorrow, they provided warmth, comfort, clarity, and calm. They made us feel as though my father was the only person in the world they were looking after — and that is exactly how deeply personal and heartfelt their care is.

I initially thought their chapel was more traditional than what suited my father’s contemporary taste — but I couldn’t have been more wrong. It was warm, peaceful, comforting, and filled with heart. It ended up being the perfect place for him.

The entire team at Luckings & Sons were remarkable. Their professionalism, their humanity, their sensitivity, and their dedication were beyond anything I could have hoped for. They honoured my father with grace, respect, and love.

I would recommend them with all my heart. Their compassion changed one of the hardest experiences of my life into something beautiful, dignified, and meaningful.

recommendsMy wonderful 85 year old father died in Weymouth and we wanted a natural burial for him in Essex. We also wanted a funeral at the earliest opportunity due to the imminent birth of of my grandson with my daughter (the mother) being classed high risk. We thus had a lot going on all at once and had to process the funeral over the phone. We really needed an undertaker that we could trust, that was efficient and whose costs were transparent. That is exactly what we got with Lucking & Sons. Nothing was too much trouble for them, they were always there at the end of the phone after a couple of rings, they clearly know every aspect of the business and we felt a sense of relief once Dad was picked up by them in Weymouth and taken to be looked after in Chelmsford. Lucking also watched the costs of other parties in the care of Dad which saved us several hundred pounds. The undertaker and pall bearers were very respectful and careful. At such a sad time we were very relieved that Dad got the care he so deserved. Baby subsequently arrived 17 days early!

So when my husband passed away in January we (myself and children) had no hesitation in asking them to carry out his Funeral. Darren and the team were great. Darren was so patient and understanding and all our wishes were carried out just as we wanted. Nothing was to much trouble and the day of the funeral went without a hitch.

Without hesitation we chose M Lucking & sons again, this time for my mum’s funeral. My dad passed away in October 2021. As expected Roy was superb in supporting us through the process. Darren and the entire team at M Lucking & Sons were absolutely outstanding from start to finish. Living out of the area, I wasn’t sure who to trust with my dad’s service, but they exceeded every expectation. Communication was effortless, and Darren treated us with genuine kindness, compassion, and professionalism during such a difficult time. Thank you so much Darren and the team at Lucking & Sons for the funeral arrangements for my daughter. My first time arranging a funeral on my own. From the time I contacted them they talked me through everything and nothing was too much trouble. They were so respectful, I knew my daughter was in safe hands (thats really important when emotions are so raw). Every question asked was answered. Attending the office, there was a warm and considerate welcome The place itself is really lovely, even down to the room you sit in to discuss arrangements, its a lovely cottage style, small living room and makes you feel at home (that was so much nicer than a clinical office). They were so thoughtful and kind during such a distressing time. I felt like I could just be myself and ask whatever I needed. They remember details and on the day of the funeral you feel like friends have turned up. It is a very personal service. They can arrange it all for you, down to the celebrant and music, photos etc.Also I was pleasantly suprised at the cost for such a High End service.I highly recommend them and can see why they have been in business for over 300 years! What a wonderful piece of history in Chelmsford this company is.

Gran and our whole family received exceptional care and support from Roy and the team at M Lucking & Sons. From the moment she was collected at the care home through to the funeral, and immediately afterwards, we received the highest standard of service – professional and dignified at all times. Roy and the rest of the M Lucking & Sons team helped us on the difficult journey of saying goodbye to my Dad. Fortunately, we hope, in life we don’t have to go through this experience very often. When my mum passed away it was a saturday afternoon and the body had to be taken from the care home immediately. They had no way of keeping her. I was desperate to find a funeral director to help. I found Lucking and sons on internet and was so lucky. Darren told me not to worry he would take care of everything. I can’t recommend M. Lucking & Sons enough, their support and service was excellent. Darren dealt with my mother’s funeral and was excellent support. Introducing me to Guy our minister for the cremation service, arranging the meeting at his office on a Saturday morning for me as I was travelling.The service on the day was excellent everyone showed a lot of compassion, the finer details such as bowing and not rushing the service makes it all the more special.They also arrange a webcast so my mother’s older brother in America could watch the service live.Overall an exceptional service from this team.

I can’t recommend M. Lucking & Sons enough. Their attention to detail with Darren on that first meeting to ironing out issues with mum being in Cambridge and Luckings travelling to get her back to Essex for us.Their attentiveness with their follow up calls right up to the day before my mums funeral has been outstanding – alleviating any unnecessary stress we may have felt. Darren dealt with my father’s funeral from start to burial. I am sad to have lost my father, but the whole team at M Lucking&sons were exceptional, they are kind, very respectful, everything was managed really well, taking most of the stress off me, on the day everyone showed alot of compassion, the finer details such as bowing and not rushing the service makes it all the more special.
